Public sector schemes
NHS
NHS Pension Scheme ↗
The NHS Pension Scheme pays a guaranteed income. You can't move it into a personal pension, but you can check your record with NHS Pensions.
School, academy or college
Teachers' Pension Scheme (teaching staff) or Local Government Pension Scheme (support staff) ↗
Teachers are usually in the Teachers' Pension Scheme. Support staff are usually in the Local Government Pension Scheme run by the county or city council.
Local council or public body
Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) ↗
The LGPS is run locally by regional funds. The LGPS member site lists every fund's contact details.
Civil Service
Civil Service Pension Scheme ↗
Civil Service pensions pay a guaranteed income and can't be moved into a personal pension.
Armed forces
Armed Forces Pension Scheme ↗
Armed Forces pensions are run by Veterans UK.
University
USS (most older universities), Teachers' Pension Scheme or LGPS ↗
Academic staff at older universities are usually in USS. Newer universities often use the Teachers' Pension Scheme, and professional staff are often in the LGPS or a university scheme.
